i just got a new laptop and i want to migrate my database from the old to the new laptop (my old laptop will not be used any longer). i just upgraded to version 3.0 (using the full install file for regsitered users).
i tried two approaches:
1a copy entire xmm folder from old to new laptop 1b install xmm on new
2a install xmm on new 2b copy entire xmm folder from old to new laptop
neither one did work. i want to copy not only the database file itself but of course all pictures, etc.
i think part of the problem is that the old path (c:\extreme movie manager 1.1\) is hard-coded into the exe and i installed with the default (c:\program files\extreme movie manager).
i changed all occurences of the old path in the registry to the new but that did not help. as soon as the exe starts it resets all registry entries to the old path!
what exactly didn't work? I think way 2 is the right one. Additionally you must edit things like the cover and photo directory in the preference menue (see help file).
xmm starts and tells me i need to select a default db. i do that by selecting the one i copied over from my old laptop and making it the new default. it tells me the default was set. i hit ok and a new message comes up saying that i haven't choosen a default db and that xmm will shut down now and that i must launch it again.
there seems no way out of that loop...
the same happens if i chose any of the default dbs that come with the installation.

I didn't know that there was a "full install file for registered users" available? Are you sure that it wasn't just the "update file" which is about 3MB large?
Try this on your "new" laptop: 1) Go here: http://www.binaryworks.it/extrememoviemanager/download_extreme.php 2) Download the shareware version "eXtreme Movie Manager 3.0 BUILD 1 (FULL)". 3) Install it and make sure that you install the "runtime files" too (just to be on the safe side ) 4) Since you didn't write which version of Windows you are using on your "new" laptop then reboot the computer to make sure that the installation of the runtime files are completed correctly. 4) Install the "eXtreme Movie Manager 3.0 Build 1 (UPDATE ONLY))" for registered users. If you changed the path when you installed the shareware version then remember to put the upgrade in the same folder 5) Now try to run XMM and see if it works.
yes, there is indeed a full version of 3.0 for registered users. it's about 13mb.
here's what i did that worked:
1. i uninstalled all previous versions and deleted the folder. 2. installed full 3.0, including the runtime (which i did not install before) 3. started it and assigned a default db (just any) 4. removed folder on "new" 5. copied entire folder from "old" to "new" 6. changed registry to new default db 7. started and works like a charm.
hard to say what made it work. i use "new" as a (software) development system, so i thought i had all the latest runtimes. and when it installed the runtime it reported for many dlls that the ones on my system were newer (which i kept of course). but - there may have been a dll in between that i did not yet have on my system that made it work.
i think also step 3 is important (i didn't start it before, but copied over immediately), as this may have set some important variables...
anyways, i am glad it works. thank you all for your help!
