I think it was better in XMM 4.x where season was a Text field. I have series whos seasons are not numbered but have unique names.
For example
Ghost in the Shell First Gig is the offiecal name of the first season
Ghost in the Shell Second Gig is the official name of the second
other shows the subsquent seasons have diffrent names and diffrent plots
Tenchi Muyo <- first, second, and ,Six season
Tenchi Universe <- Third season
Tenchi in Tokyo. <- Forth
Tenchi GXP <- Fifth
