Posted - 13 May 2009 : 03:10:23 Hi,
Just came across a problem that could potentially effect everyone.
PROBLEM: I keep my collection of movies and TV shows on a WD Passport portable Hard Drive. Last week I completed my reformatting of the file names so I could easily bring them into XMM. All worked well. Today I hooked my portable drive and noticed that the drive letter had change (because my number of external drives changed). However, XMM was unable to deal with the drive letter changing.
RECOMMENDATION: It would be nice if there were some kind of way to detect when the video files within a database folder were referencing a drive/directory that was not available. And to some how deal with the problem with minimal user interaction.
SHORT TERM SOLUTION: A simple short term solution would be a user initiated right-click drop down menu off of the Series name or Database name that would allow the user to enter a different temporary drive/location name. Then XMM would remap the original drive/loaction with the new drive/location. The change would only be for that session and not permanent (in this quick fix).
LONG TERM SOLUTION: A long term solution for this would be to have XMM check for this type of problem during the initial opening of the series folder or database opening. Once the problem was detected, have XMM prompt for the new drive/directory location as well as ask if this change is temporary or premanent and then make the necessary changes to the within XMM.

Posted - 25 Jun 2009 : 21:44:14 I have multiple drives that get connected to multiple machines and a WD media player. I have each drive with a different name EXTERNAL EXTERNAL1 EXTERNAL2 and Storage I have assigned a drive letter to each of them in Disc management (and labeled the drives themselves) and I just make sure that they stay the same when plugged back in. Sometimes the users have to do SOME things themselves. Not hard to do and saves a ton of potential problems! |

Posted - 18 Jun 2009 : 14:05:35 exactly i'd like a more intelligent and automatic solution but the 'Multiple changes at once' is already not so bad, I did not knew I could do that. |

Posted - 18 Jun 2009 : 12:32:21 Hi Stevieraveon,
This can be done also with XMM, there is a function (right click on selected movies -> Mutiple changes at once -> Replace word on files)
I think that Rincevent want a more "intelligent" solution, with XMM that automatically keep track of all changes in files.

Posted - 16 Jun 2009 : 05:36:34 If you have MS OFfice, why not just open up .mdb database in MS Access, go to the table, open the Movies table and do a mass replace in the MovieFile1 - MovieFile6 fields.
Simply highlight the columns, press Ctrl + H (command for find and replace) and change "K:\Movies\TVShows" to "K:\Tvshows" |

Posted - 15 Jun 2009 : 15:18:09 Hi Alessio, thanks for the info, unfortunatly I also changed the paths so I guess I just have to wait for a more complete solution
k:\Movies\TVShows\Dexter\dexter_s01e01.avi became k:\TVShows\Dexter\dexter_s01e01.avi

Posted - 15 Jun 2009 : 14:14:49 Hi,
Please download the latest release, I have modify it.
The basic idea is this:
If you have a movie that point to "d:\movies\matrix.avi" and XMM cannot find it, it will search to all your drivers the same file, I mean:
Suppose you have in your PC the hard disk or usb as c:,e:,f:
c:\movies\matrix.avi e:\movies\matrix.avi f:\movies\matrix.avi
Just that, nothing more (for now)

Alessio
Great news, can't wait to see it. I often move my files in a search for the best folder organisation and it's not something XMM handle very well for now
If you do so juste be careful, if one movie is not found at the specified place, I would not like if XMM starts to scan ALL folders without asking me, specially if I'm at work and I have lots of network folders. (a dialog box aking wich drives to scan will be perfetct)

I dont think this is a long term solution. Just imagine movies on DVD or Blue Ray and several drives in your system. It should not make any difference if you put the DVD in drive D: or in drive E:. An USB-Stick could get an unpredictable new letter also. Nowadays people are using harddrives as exchangeable media and this could lead to similar problems too. (sometimes the same (!!) harddisk is used in a external usb-drive, sometimes as an interchangeable internal sata-drive).
A longterm solution for this is to identify the media through their names (harddisk, DVD, USB-Stick, ...). In this case its only up to the user to use different names. And it is up to XMM to get the correct drive letter for file access. |

Posted - 13 May 2009 : 15:49:44 another solution is , as I mentionned in my post about the portable installation is :
when XMM is installed in portable mode do not memorise path as 'F:\myMovies\Recent\Terminator4.avi' but as something like 'root_drive\myMovies\Recent\Terminator4.avi'
'root_drive' can be easily obtained via Windows API at XMM start
This should be done when XMM is installed in portable mode and only for movies located on the same drive XMM is installed to (because you don't want to change drive letter in paths of movies located in c:\ for instance)
Doing so would be perfect, you acn put XMM on your external HDD, with your movies and you can lau!nch XMM from any PC exemple : you go to a friend house, you plug your hdd, launch XMM and start browsing your collection so yuor friend can easily see what you got. |
