Hi, I was curious to know if future versions could have the option of using an external db? Is this possible, or would it require a re-write of XMM?

Also, I was wondering about another option. Have you thought of having future version run completely off of a website (PhP, ASP, etc.)? I was thinking about this as for the most part I use XMM to export to my personal webserver.

Any news on this Alessio? Are you going to be using odbc to access alternative db's?

Good to hear that. So does it mean I could publish my XMM database online and I'll be ok ?

as for legal.. In fact the IMDB has a download page where they allow you to freely download their ENTIRE dbase.

everything is in there. I downloaded it myself and find it very interesting, but it is not illegal or they would not offer it to me for free Download.

Hi, thanks for the replies. I don't think the website function is as important as having an external db. Especially with a seperate mysql db I am sure a lot of people would develop php sites.

Not all the data are protected by copyright! For example director, actors are public domain informations... Who can tell that you wrote those by yourself? But also the plot it's legal if it's taken from the press book of the film (many sites use this kind of plot and the press book is given to journalist and similia to cut and copy !).
It's obvious that comments and review are protected but not the quotation so if you take a review and you quote it, it's legal (look at kataweb cinema review http://www.kataweb.it/cinema/recensioni.jsp ... all quotations and no original contents)

Hi,

I do not agree with you. the use of XMM itself it's absolutely NOT illegal. You can retrieve informations from internet from ANY website you want, simply you cannot "re-publish" these informations.

Think to this: if XMM is illegal, also Interner Explorer, Mozilla etc.. are illegal, because you can browse websites and, with "save as" function, you can save the informations in your Hard Disk. XMM do the same thing, allow you to browse informations of movies and save informations on your hard disk.

About IMDB for example: they allow you to retrieve information from their website, what they want is only that you write that you have take data from their website (as you know, you can download also their whole database!)

So, XMM is not illegal, you can retrieve informations from websites freely, you mut only take care about putting it on your personal website (for example, you cannot put online movie's plot that you haven't write by yourself).

If it is indeed illegal, the very usage of EMM is illegal. This is a very complicated issue. Are you a expert in copyright in this respect or a lawyer ?

Not only that it is illegal to publish onto internet, the fact that we are using EMM itself is breaking the law since we import any web sites movie information without getting permission from the sites.

Another example would be, as far as DVD and Hollowood is concerned, you are not supposed to even have a personal backup copy of your movies, even if you legally own the original copies !

I don't think is a good option. The information from XMM cannot be published to Internet because they are copyrighted to imdb or other sites. Anyone who want to make a movie site will have the same problem, no information from copyrighted sites cannot be used without permision.

Hi,

The use of external DB will be possible in future, but the "run completely off a website" it's hard, because I don't know very much ASP, only a bit.

Thank you,

Alessio
